Laser Cutting Safety: Fumes, Eyes and Enclosure

The three risks that matter in a laser cutting shop and how to control them.

Laser cutting is safe when the machine and the shop are set up correctly. Three risks matter.

1. Fumes and dust

Cutting coated steel, plastics or oiled sheet produces fumes. Extraction must be sized for the material mix, not just for the machine. Check the fume extraction specification and filter type before installation.

2. Eyes

Laser safety glasses matched to the wavelength are required anywhere the beam is not fully enclosed. Fiber lasers are 1064 nm - ordinary sunglasses are not protection.

3. Enclosure and interlocks

Class 1 enclosures with interlocks prevent accidental exposure. Open-bed machines require a controlled area and signage.

Authoritative guidance is available from the Laser Institute of America and from OSHA for workplace requirements in the United States.
