Machine Types
Three machine families cover most industrial work. Choosing the wrong one is the most expensive mistake in the purchase.
| Type | Materials | Typical range | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiber laser cutting | Metals | 0.5–30 mm | Sheet metal, tube, high-volume production |
| CO2 laser cutting | Wood, acrylic, leather, textiles | 1–20 mm | Signage, engraving, non-metal fabrication |
| Laser marking | Almost all materials | Surface marking | Part numbers, logos, traceability |
Fiber laser cutting machines
The default for metal sheet. Power classes from 1.5 kW to 30 kW; 3–6 kW covers most job-shop work. Key decisions: bed size, power, laser source brand and cutting head.
CO2 laser cutting machines
The right tool for non-metals. CO2 machines cannot cut steel economically, and fiber machines cannot cut acrylic. A shop handling both often runs one of each.
Laser marking machines
Not cutting machines: they mark surfaces for identification. Common in tool rooms, electronics and medical device production.
Rule of thumb: metal sheet → fiber; acrylic/wood → CO2; part identification → marking. Mixed material shops usually need more than one family.
