Nesting and Material Yield: Where the Profit Hides
Material is the largest cost in most cutting jobs. Nesting software decides how much of it you waste.
On a typical job, material is 40-60 percent of the part cost. A few percent better yield changes the margin more than a faster machine.
What good nesting does
- Rotates and mirrors parts to fit the sheet.
- Shares cut lines between adjacent parts when the material allows.
- Groups parts by thickness and material to reduce setup.
- Leaves offcut sizes the shop can reuse.
The offcut decision
Every nest trades scrap against reusable offcut. Shops that track offcuts recover material that others sell as scrap.
The Fabricator and machine builders publish practical nesting articles; the largest gains usually come from the material yield report in the nesting software, reviewed weekly.
